Euzko Gudarostea was the name used by the army created by the Provisional Government of the Basque Country during the Spanish civil war. After the coup d'état of July 1936 and the subsequent outbreak of the Spanish civil war, the Basque provinces of Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa remained in territory loyal to the Republic, while most of Álava and Navarra were taken by the rebel side in the first days of the conflict. The republican military garrisons began to form groups of volunteers. Given the large influx of PNV sympathizers to the ranks of volunteers (from left-wing parties and unions), the Basque Government determined the foundation, at the beginning of August 1936, of the Euzko Gudarostea.
