With the outbreak of the civil war in July 1936, the Falange quickly sided with the rebels against the government of the Second Republic. During the first months of the war, the party, which during the 1930s had constituted a small fascist formation in the Spanish political arena, rapidly expanded its membership from several thousand to several tens of thousands. The male organization of the Falange was accompanied by an auxiliary organization made up of women, the so-called Women's Section (SF).
