The Thälmann Battalion was a battalion integrated into the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Its name was a tribute to the German communist leader Ernst Thälmann (April 16, 1886 - executed August 18, 1944). Throughout its existence it had up to 1,500 members, mainly Germans and Austrians, as well as from other Central European and Scandinavian countries.
