In Barcelona both the commanders of the Civil Guard, Aranguren and Escobar, as well as their men, remained faithful to the Republic and effectively fought the rebellion. In Madrid the troops remained faithful and later helped to suppress both the rebellion of the Cuartel de la Montaña, and suppress the rebel pockets that were in the surroundings of the capital
