José Buenaventura Durruti Dumange (León, July 14, 1896-Madrid, November 20, 1936) was a Spanish syndicalist and anarchist revolutionary. Durruti was one of the most important figures of Spanish anarchism and the CNT union organization. He died at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War fighting on the Republican side at the head of a militia formation known in his name as the Durruti column. When the Civil War broke out in 1936, he was one of the main protagonists of the revolutionary events of July, forming part of the "We" group and the leadership in defense of the city of Barcelona.
