The 5th Regiment of Popular Militias, generally called the Fifth Regiment, was a famous military corps of volunteers of the Second Spanish Republic during the first months of the Spanish Civil War. It was an elite corps of the republican army still made up only of militias which was forged at the initiative of the Communist Party of Spain and the Unified Socialist Youth (JSU). When this militia ceased to exist, many of its former members joined the 1st Mixed Brigade,4 or the 11th Division of the new People's Army of the Republic.
