At the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936, the corps was divided almost 50% between the forces of both sides, although the General Inspector of the corps, General Pozas, remained faithful to the Republican government. In Barcelona both the commanders of the Civil Guard, Aranguren and Escobar, like their men, remained faithful to the Republic and effectively fought the rebellion. In Madrid, the troops remained faithful and later helped to suppress both the rebellion in the Cuartel de la Montaña and to suppress the rebel pockets that were around the capital.
