Bertrand du Guesclin, also known in Spanish as Beltrán Duguesclín, was a French soldier and constable. Du Guesclin is famous in France for his role in the Hundred Years' War against England, and also in Spain for having intervened in the campaigns that Henry II of Trastámara, the Fratricide, held against his brother King Pedro I of Castile. His ugliness was legendary: "That man with an enormous head, a large body, short legs, small eyes, although with a lively and penetrating look," according to a chronicler of the time. "I am too ugly," he said, "to win the affection of women; but on the other hand I know how to make myself feared by my enemies."
