The Ethiopian Emperor, Menelik II, managed to defeat an Italian army through a combination of bravery, flaws in the Italian chain of command, and well-spent opportunities during battle. The Ethiopian army was made up of provincial armies made up of feudal militias and led by a Ras (the local warlord).
